George Marsden

George Marsden

George Marsden is a Protestant evangelical serving as the Francis A. McAnaney Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame. We draw attention to this fact because his presence there, as well as that of a number of other Protestant evangelicals, raises the very serious question of how much singular doctrinal allegiance is required to maintain and sustain the Christian witness of a college or university, an issue directly relevant to the questions raised by this conference.

Among many other works, Prof. Marsden is the author of the award winning biography of Jonathan Edwards, Jonathan Edwards: A Life. (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2003).

Some of his other publications are:

  • Secularization of the Academy (New York: Oxford University Press, 1992) - co-editor with Bradley J. Longfield.
  • The Soul of the American University: from Protestant Establishment to Established Nonbelief (Oxford University Press, 1994)
  • The Outrageous Idea of Christian Scholarship (Oxford University Press, 1997)
